Big Spring
High School
is located in Central Pennsylvania and is located
approximately 40 miles south of
Harrisburg
in the town of Newville. The
Big Spring School District
student population is close to 3,200 with an
enrollment of 1,100 students at the high school
level.
At Big Spring, we pride ourselves on offering a wide range of
quality instrumental experiences, with the concert
program at the core. It is the belief of the
entire instrumental faculty that a well-rounded
education, including challenging musical
experiences, encourages a lifelong love of music,
as well as responsibility and growth in character
that continues into other aspects of the
students’ lives.
Elementary.
In the Big Spring
School District, band instruction begins in fourth grade at each
of four elementary schools, meeting once per week
in heterogeneous groupings. The elementary band
plays two full concerts per year, in addition to
school-specific concerts in each building.
Middle
School. At the middle school,
there are two concert bands: 6th-grade band and
7th/8th-grade band.
Each group meets twice in the six-day
cycle. Jazz band is also offered in the winter
and spring and meets one day a week after school.
High
School. At Big Spring, the Concert Band meets four days a week for the
entire school year. The Twilight Jazz Ensemble and
Gold Jazz Band are offered after-school for the
full year. The Marching Bulldogs is a
co-curricular activity, which is voluntary and
meets two days per week after school in the fall.
Student
Growth and Achievement. We
encourage private study and participation in
honors groups and leadership activities. Students
at Big Spring High School participate in the
Vivace Student Leadership Camps; Harrisburg
Symphony Youth Orchestra; Blue Lake Arts Academy;
Cumberland County Honor Band; PMEA District 7
Honor Band; PMEA Region V Honor Band; and PMEA
State Honor Band.
Our
band program is supported in part by a very active
parent booster group and by the Big Spring Board
of Education.
